OSSAA (overseas surgical specialists association of Australia) has, for many years, visited this area in West Timor to evaluate and undertake surgery on children with congenital birth deformities (cleft palate and hair lip). Our South Australian team, led by Dr. Mark Moore AM, have worked closely with local medical staff there. The area, whose population in West Timor numbers around 400,000, needs a hospital, surgery, a school for children, and community centre care, to deal with the needs of villagers, and, in particular, those suffering from leprosy, in some villages, up to 10% of its population. And, it is curable. Dr Harianto (Harry to us all!), and the sisters living on their mission in Naob, work tirelessly for the communities, and wish to set up adequate medical facilities, as well as a school, and an educational re-training centre for the very poor local villages. Along with other areas of Timor, they need water – health care – education, and the proposed plan for buildings and equipment is achievable, and necessary. This is a longer term project than the Balibo pre-school but is vitally important for the education and health of the local village families.

Xanadu is seeking to raise funds of $20,000.00 which will enable construction of the pre-school, daily education and feeding of the children, and health care for 2-5 year olds and their families.

You will be participating in making such a difference in the lives of these village families, if you can help.

The PRR order of nuns, who have been involved with the village life at Balibo for more than 10 years, are currently running a pre-school for children aged 2-5, from borrowed rooms in the area. They, and the village of Balibo, would love to have their own premises, so that the sisters are able to properly care for these children from very poor families, and feed them daily on the recognized Timor malnutrition program. Malnutrition, lack of running water, lack of adequate hygiene and education are major contributors to such high levels of illness and death of young children in Timor. A pre-school dedicated to their needs, with teaching facilities, playground, and kitchen will aid their survival enormously.

A donation of $6.00 will buy one bag of cement, and aid in the construction of this important facility.

I visited both East Timor and West Timor during last November on behalf of Xanadu, and returned with two important projects that we believe are achievable, necessary, and will provide the long-term help in health and education that families in the local village communities have asked for.

ABOUT EAST TIMOR

· 30th August 2001, East Timor was able to hold the first free elections.
· An estimated 70% of the country’s infrastructure, buildings and homes destroyed or damaged, by Indonesian military forces just prior to Independence.
· Thousands of East Timorese killed, 2/3 of the population displaced, or deported to West Timor.
· It is the poorest nation in South East Asia, with 40% of the population living on less than 76c. per day.
· It currently has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world, 830 women per 100,000 live births, and 85 babies per 1000 live births.
· Unemployment rates sit at 70%.
· 19th May, 2002, the new flag for East Timor was raised, its new national anthem sung, and it became the world’s newest democracy and the first new country of the third millennium.
